Robotic revolution: why now? A hardware perspective

Robotic revolution: why now? A hardware perspective

We have previously argued that everything in the world of robotics is changing. Indeed, we have shown that robots are increasingly becoming collaborative, mobile and intelligent, leaving their confines in factories to enter more aspects of industry and daily life. This trend will have profound long-term economical and societal consequences. Indeed, our report New Robotics and Drones 2018-2038: Technologies, Forecasts, Players forecasts that the market for robots and drones will grow from $66 billion in 2018 to more than 210 billion in 2028.

The state of the electric vehicle charging infrastructure

The state of the electric vehicle charging infrastructure

The global electric vehicle population reached 3 million units at the end of 2017, which represents approximately 0.23% of the global vehicle population. Electric vehicle producers have responded to consumer's range anxiety by increasing the available range per charge in their vehicles to more than 200 miles. However ultimately the deployment of electric vehicles will depend on the deployment of ubiquitous chargers.

Smart Cities Massively Exceeding Expectation

The term smart city originally meant little beyond using much more information technology IT. However, new IDTechEx report, "Smart City Opportunities: Infrastructure, Systems, Materials 2019-2029" reveals that much more dramatic changes are both required and possible and humans will be in the driving seat.

Fiber laser sensing trends: LiDAR, gas detection & structural health

Fiber lasers have a large share of the laser material processing market but are typically limited to aerospace and defence applications in the sensing market segment. That is set to change within the next decade as emerging applications of fiber laser technologies include automotive LiDAR, multi-species gas sensing and structural health monitoring.

Machine Vision

Machine Vision

The term machine vision describes a group of technologies that enable a machine to see via imaging for the purpose of process automation, and often refers to industrial vision systems. Applications of machine vision include automated product inspection and vision guided robotics. Here we consider four technology types: illuminating, sensing, processing and learning.
